DAY CAMP TRAFFIC CREW REQUIREMENTS 2010

Registered Boy Scouts who work the entire week on the Youth Volunteer Traffic Crew at Saddleback District Cub Scout Day Camp are eligible to earn 6 Merit Badges and 20 service hours by completing the following requirements:

  • Day Camp Youth Volunteer Application must be filled out and submitted to the Day Camp Staff at Roundtable or Scout-O-Rama to apply for this position. Go to the Saddleback District Day Camp Website for for the proper form and information on where to turn in your application. Scouts must submit a Day Camp Youth Volunteer Application to Day Camp Staff AND apply via email to Deputy Spratt to be on the traffic crew. Without the Day Camp Youth Volunteer Application on file, a Scout cannot be on Traffic Crew.

  • Rank - First Class Scouts or Higher (Some exceptions will be made on a case by case basis).

  • Staffing - Traffic Crew will be limited to 25 Scouts per session (AM or PM). 5 positions will be for Scouts who have been on the Traffic Crew before or already have the Merit Badges. Those Scouts will be placed in a Leadership position. 20 positions will be for Scouts who either do not have all of the offered Merit Badges or who have never been on the Traffic Crew before.

  • Uniform - Scouts participating on the Traffic Crew must wear the following uniform: Traffic Crew hat, Day Camp Shirt, Scout Shorts/Pants, Scout socks, and closed toe shoes. Scouts who arrive without the complete uniform will be sent home and dismissed from the Traffic Crew for the remainder of the week. Please bring sun block and a hydration system.

  • Commitment - Attend all 5 days of Day Camp, arrive at Day Camp 45 minutes before the Day Camp Session begins and stay up to 60 minutes after each session to assist with traffic control. (Scouts will be properly equipped and trained for their traffic control duties.)

  • Training - Attend a MANDATORY training session on Sunday, June 27, 2010 3:00 - 5:00pm at O'Neill Park.

  • Behavior - Maintain a courteous and respectful attitude while directing traffic. Follow the Scout Oath and Law.

  • Application - If you can meet the above listed requirements, apply via email to Deputy Spratt, Director of Traffic and Security, for a position on the Traffic Crew. THE SCOUT SHOULD MAKE THE APPLICATION, NOT HIS PARENTS! On your application, list:
    • your name
    • current grade in school
    • Troop number
    • current rank in Boy Scouts
    • phone number
    • which session you are working: morning or afternoon
    • Also list which of the six offered Merit Badges you have earned already
    In addition to the email application to DEPUTY SPRATT scouts must fill out the Day Camp Youth Volunteer Application and submit it to the Day Camp staff at Roundtable or Scout-O-Rama.

  • Deadline - No registrations will be accepted after Scout-O-Rama, May 15, 2010.

IN ADDITION TO DIRECTING TRAFFIC AND ASSISTING THE DAY CAMP STAFF AS NEEDED, THE TRAFFIC CREW WILL WORK ON THE BELOW LISTED MERIT BADGES THROUGHOUT THE DAY. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY FOR ALL 5 DAYS OF CAMP FOR A SCOUT TO EARN THE MERIT BADGES. SCOUTS SELECTED FOR TRAFFIC CREW WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WORK AT OTHER PROGRAM AREAS DURING THAT SESSION OF CAMP. THEY CAN WORK ANYWHERE THEY LIKE FOR THE OTHER SESSION. SCOUTS WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO WORK ON THE TRAFFIC CREW FOR EITHER THE MORNING OR AFTERNOON SESSION, NOT BOTH.

    The following Merit Badges can be earned by the Traffic Crew:

  • Communications
  • Fingerprinting
  • Fire Safety
  • Law
  • Traffic Safety

Directions and Prerequisites:

DO NOT BEGIN WORK UNTIL YOU RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION FROM DEPUTY SPRATT

Purchase (or check out from your Troop) and read the Merit Badge Pamphlet for each Merit Badge listed. Print a copy of each of the worksheets from the links below and fill out your answers to the prerequisites on the worksheet. Bring both the merit badge pamphlet(s) and prerequisites with you in a large 3-ring binder each day of Day Camp along with a pen, paper, and 6 blue cards signed by your Scout Master. Complete the following requirements for each Merit Badge before June 27 and bring your work with you every day of Day Camp:
